Week 6 buttkicking!

On one of the pregame shows Drew Brees was confident that the Saints would put 40 on the Giants. Well the Giants certainly did their part to make that prediction come true. The Giants need to get healthy in the secondary. On a upside, the Giants were able to improve on the return game. Clearly the recent JV schedule masked some weakness's on the defense. Next week's game against the pass heavy Cardinals may be more of the same if the Giants can't find answers on the defensive side of ball.

Sitting out here in the Bay Area, where first thing this morning I was THRILLED (not) to find out we may have been the only Fox station on earth not airing the Giants-Saints game (London even aired it), and instead of football, aired some bogus Chris Wallace political discussion, I again had to watch the game by cellphone play-by-play, Sirius NFL Radio and laptop. Of course, the thrills continued as the game progressed.Meanwhile, at 1pm PST the Raiders Eagles game began, and I sit here incredulous, wondering if the Giants Defense took the plane home with Oakland last week. Boy, to your point Den, we better figure something out cause if this was a test, it's not going to get any easier. And I would much prefer to fly home for a win also. Do you find this valuable? |

Saints at home, after a bye week, officials that left their seeing eye dog home and playing against a team with the most innovative offensive mind (in Sean Payton) since Bill Walsh was too much to overcome. We were beaten by the better team today. The most glaring weakness I saw watching this game in Ohio was that me thinks Bill Sheridan is a LB coach; not a DC.....BIG difference. We were way too defensive for my liking. Our defense was on its heels the entire game today. Without a pass rush, stunts or blitzes the young 2ndary was confused and overmatched and our LB's are too slow. Spags was so much more aggressive that it hid some of those things. On the positive side,Hixon looked great and his speed will help deep passing game in long run. We need to put this one behind us quickly and get ready for Cards. This fan is not worried one bit. N.O. and Minny are outstanding football teams....we need to get better and we will! We needed the wakeup call and better early in the season than later.

The last time the Giants allowed a QB to throw for 350+yds. and 4 TD's in same game was 1966, Don Meredith. gmen11, you may be on to something in regards to DC Sheridan, definitely no pressure from defensive side of ball. You can see the difference from last couple of seasons. Coach Coughlin called it a shared blame game. Coaches did'nt prepare, players did'nt execute, total team lack of effort. Hakeem Nicks had a good game while the Giants were playing catch-up. Wake-up call for sure! You don't have to worry, this fan will do enough for everyone.

For me , the bottom line is this! How do you prepare for Breese and the Saints all week and not be smart enough to realize you need to blitz and Blitz often against these guys! The defensive game plan had no imagination , PERIOD! When a defense shifts and moves around it puts the offense in check, causing them to react to what we are doing NOT VICE VERSA! gmen is right, today , Sheridan did in fact resemble a line backer coach , not an innovative Defensive Coordinator . I was disgusted watching this sad game today! The pass rush was NON EXISTENT !! Explain that to me !! We could have offset their game plan by creating confusion on their part . And if Sheridan can't be innovative , then he has no business being in this position . I didn't want to believe that we looked so good these past 5 weeks just because of our opposition , but the glaring weaknesses on the defensive side of the ball became abundantly clear today! Do I sound Pissed ...You BETCHA!!!!!!

I think it took me the entire day to calm down I was so pissed off - first with the game not being on air and then having to watch THIS crap by alternative methods. Lets just say everyone on Facebook decided it might be good to stay clear of Al today. Except for this one (old) friend who thinks he's a Giants fan but decided to say the wrong thing on FB and made me even more pissed! (nobody knocks Tom Coughlin and gets away with it). :) Gmen, I think your assessment may be spot on regarding Sheridan. I'm keepin my eye on him next week against Larry Fitz and Kurt. I honestly hope, to Coughlin's points after the game, that they got their mistakes out of their systems in one week. Do you find this valuable? |

Well I guess we need a good reality check. After the Saints game the Giants defense should be ashamed of themselves. The defense has not been this bad since the Browns game. The giants need to concetrate a lot on thier defense especially the secondary before next week or Warner will pick them apart this sunday. I just do not get the defensive coaching or lack of it. There were no blitzes Brees had all day to check 2 or 3 receivers on most of his pass playes. Every time he did pass most receivers were wide open. Yes there were a few stupid penelaties against the giants buy that should not be a excuse for playing defense like the giants did yesterday. All I heard yesterday after the game was this will never happen again and the game was a wakeup call. For the sake of the giants defense ( leading the league before the game ) they need to practice, practice, and know where the other defender is playing so they do not release any receiver without someone to cover the receiver. I hope next week we will be happy, I think we will.

Blame the secondary all you want people . GREAT DEFENSE starts at the defensive line! PASS RUSH , PASS RUSH , PASS RUSH!!!!!!!!!!! although I agree that our cornerbacks played a passive style game yesterday (Not leaving the ground to jump up for the ball) , I don't care who you are as a QB , Get as much time as Breese did yesterday (And I Don't Want To Hear About His Quick Release , He SELDOM NEEDED IT YESTERDAY ) and you are going to complete often! We are supposed to have the best Defensive End tandem in the NFL , but you could have fooled me with that assessment yesterday! Not to mention our linebacker play covering JS ! Totally atrocious and COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!!

Giants LBers has they are now are too slow to keep up with JS or half the TE's, never mind the backs in the league. Boley and Kehl only two with coverage speed. The Giants clearly miss both Phillips and Ross in the secondary. That is not an excuse, thats a fact. The Giants played a very soft zone yesterday, almost no man to man at the second level. Giants tried too pressure Brees with 4 down linemen, rarely blitzing at all. There was'nt any aggression on the part of the Giants from a defensive standpoint. I agree that just about any Pro QB worth his salt would have had success yesterday. This is not a secondary issue, it is a scheme issue. I also agree with NYTodd when I ask, where was the best defensive line in football yesterday? Playing a JV schedule three weeks in a row does'nt help any either. It's easy to have success playing down to your opponents level, it's playing up to it that means success!

Not to belabor the point....but the saints did get away with more holds in a game then I have ever seen. The mystery holding on O'Hara on Jacobs TD and the 60 yard PI on webster when the reciever clearly tripped on his own foot did not help. They need to play better but the officials were attrocious. It is hard to beat the saints 11 on 11 let alone 11 on 17 with officials turning blind eyes to obvious penalties. And now the heartbreaker. AP was schooled all day long...the center or guard on near most run plays was driving him 5 6 7 yards back from the line of scrimmage. As much as I like him, he has lost more then a step and cannot fill his gaps. in a 4 3 the MLB MUST be able to shrug off blockers and AP clearly can't any more.

To bulid on Den and your points Shib....the game has undergone another change especially on offense, as it does every 15-20 years. Everything is spread spread spread offense at every level of football. I hate watching it or trying to defend it as a HS defensive coordinator. Inevitably, you will have LB'ers in coverage vs. faster TE's a slot WR or a RB.......matchups in football are EVERYTHING. I agree with Den....Boley and Kehl can cover and I still like Blackburn in the MLB position; he can shed and tackle better than AP. As far as Ross goes, I don't know about the rest of ya, but he has previously stated that he has had a hard time getting motivated for football before this year. If he does not play by Week #7, cut his butt or trade him....time to poop or get off the potty if you ask me. I have torn a hamstring tendon and played two weeks after...if he does not want to play....bye bye! As good as our front 4 are, 5 will block 4 most of the time esp. 3 step QB drops. If Bill cannot show he is up to the transition from LB coach, let him be SHERI-DONE after ONE! On the offensive side, we need to get back to ball control and clock mngmt. Mix up the plays like NO did. Are we saving barden for a rainy day? Get the kid some playing time and let the opposing DC figure how to cover the 6-6 wideout! Collectively we have what we need to play with the big boys but OC & DC need to earn their keep imo or lets find 2 that can. No reason to panic gang; we lost to the best, most diverse, offense since the 1989 49er's. And to think Sean Payton was ours not 2 long ago. He is Coach of the Year imo, unless floor caves in. We will bounce back....it's in the "cards".........trust me on this one. I hate to repeat myslef, but I am not surprised we lost by more than 2TDs. We said young secondary needed front to help them and when they could not, we gave up nearly 500 yards...ouch! We have some work to do and I believe TC will have our boys ready.
