Are the New WR's future NFL Pro-Bowl Caliber guys?
Oct 3 2009, 10:37 AM EDT
I think so..... mario for sure....and Steve Smith is FIANALLY getting the full-time playing time he deserves. I love Domenik Hixon, and I think Barden will wait like Mario did. Nixs has Pro-Bowl size and skill....shame about the injury. Go Big Blue!!

Welcome to our Big Blue Board brother. You ask a good question. Always hard to predict the future; so many variables come in to play. Will O-line continue to protect Eli? Will Eli continue to mature like he has been doing? Will our RB's stay healthy and continue to dictate that defenses must cheat to stop them? IMO, Steve Smith has the best opportunity for a Pro Bowl this year out of the crop of WR's. He is already considered a quality possession receiver and as opponents continue to try and stop our effective running game, Smith has shown the quickness and route running skills necessary to get behind the secondary for big plays. I too like Hixon alot, but he needs more time to sharpen his WR skills and he must stop dropping balls, like the great Jerry Rice did early in his career. Mario has the skills, as does Nicks to be All Pro down the road. We have not seen Barden, but scouting report says he is talented but RAW, so he will need alot of time/reps to develop. Keep in mind, it is very difficult when you are a run first offense, as NYG has been for most of their history, to get your WR's or QB's in Pro Bowls or HOF for that matter....ask Phil Simms!

Last Giants WR/E was 1969 Homer Jones!

Hakeem Nicks and Steve Smith, in that order, have the best Pro Bowl potential. Nicks is a big play guy while Smith is a possession receiver, a la Wes Welker. Hixon was a big disappointment before his injury and may never regain his starting slot. Barden has intriguing potential. He could be the next Plaxico Burruss (hopefully, with only Plax's good qualities!) but won't get much playing time this year. Manningham seems to have butterfingers, a disturbing trait in a WR. He too is in danger of losing his starting position to Nicks.

jher: you may want to think the possession WR thing thru a little bit. I too was of the opinion that was his role, BEFORE this season. Not so sure after watching him for 5 weeks.

Hakeem and Steve - if they keep it up, they'll be in before long, and I can't wait to see it - prove everyone wrong who said we didn't have the WRs who could bring it. Lets see how we look next week first. I'm back to holding my breathe til after NO and Drew Brees next week.

He's got a good chance if the Giants will throw him the ball, get it there on target and have the other non-Pro Bowl WR's step up. Ali, you can let your breath out now, it's the Bye week... I just voted Pro-Bowl Ballots on NFL .com I definately picked Steve, cuz he's leading the NFC in catches, catches for 1st downs, and catches on 3rd down (conversions). I voted for Mario Manningham as well cuz every time I see him grab the ball, he is making guys miss. He has a talent in those hands as well, as he has snagged some of Eli's questionable tosses. His YAC seems to be part of his talent, and I would like to see Eli get him more tosses; he is a future NFL star. No Doubt. I also picked Domenick Hixon, cuz I just Love that guy.

Agree on Steve Smith this year. I see great potential in Manningham and Nicks. The preseason/offseason discussion about the WR position has taken complete turn, thanks to subpar play by rest of team. WR spot actually bright spot this season.

At the beginning of the year...everyone was criticizing what the Giants passing attack was going to be like. I for one, never doubted it. I like Steve Smith from when we won the super bowl. I see Hixon as more of a returner, Nicks is good; and to me Mario Manningham was a surprise.Do you find this valuable? |
