1-0 in NFC East
Sep 13 2009, 8:01 PM EDT
Alot could be said about this win against a game Skins team. D-line A+ did a job on Portis and got good pressure for most of the game on Campbell. LB'ers a B; Blackburn had a nice game. Secondary minus Ross gets a B+ and cudos to the undrafted ex Miami Hurricane (Roble's team) for a forced fumble and some great play in pressure start due to injuries. Never hurts to have a Cane on your roster! On the offense, O-lne gets a B, Eli made some nice throws, showed some footwork in the pocket, but costly fumble and ill advised throw off of back foot for INT (deja vu Philly game) lowers grade to B. Bradshaw, like I told our moderator over the summer is a beast and made some great runs and gets an A-. Wr's get an overall B+ and Steve Smith gets an A, Boss an B+, Manningham a B+ and Hixon almost made a real nice grab on a very nice throw. Nicks, I give a B minus and I hope his injury is not serious. BJ gets a B-, but is still invaluable as our emotional leader. Losing Ware hurts; hopefully for not too long. All in all I am happy with our performance against one of the best defenses in the league. Like most of us have said all along, our WR's/TE's are fine.....no need to keep wondering about that. Let's get healthy for the Cowboys. GO BIG BLUE!

It was a nice "comfortable" win for our team today. I never felt like it was getting away from us despite the tight score. The Washington QB situation is ready to blow. It was obvious that Zorn is not cofortable with him, and that is why you can no longer take this organization serious anymore. We seem to have the same problem as last year with being unable to finish long drives with TD's. It seems with the shorter field that other teams stack up against the NY run and short pass. Coaching has to solve this to get the opposition to quit early in games. Dallas will be tough in there home opener, and it will be an emotional night in Dallas. I do think we can win, but it will not be at all easy. Glad to see Nicks' injury is not all that serious. Do you find this valuable? |

G - did you and I watch the same game???? I think you are being way too nice with the grading. I love our guys, but I gotta say - in my eyes, while the D did some nice things and managed to hold them back, I think they seemed mostly out of it - with few exceptions. That trick play on the field goal for a touchdown should not have happened. There is no way they get an A+ with that play and they won't hold off Choice, Barber, Jones, Whitten and Crayton unless they are 100% on fire next week. The O-Line needs to step it up a notch or two also.I also don't think we brought enough pressure on Campbell - with few exceptions. Don't get me wrong - A) we got the W, B) there were some solid, heads up moments on both sides of the ball (Manningham, Boss, Webster, Osi, Bruce Johnson, Amahd and BJ, Eli looked pretty good), but I think we need to step it up quite a bit next week to get past a very scrappy, seemingly unified Dallas team. I think we have some work to do. Do you find this valuable? |

AC, Im glad youdid get to see the game after all. Our defensive line had 3 sacks, held a game runner in Portis to only one good gain, recovered a fumble and ran back for a TD and bailed out Eli after it seemed his 2 turnovers would once again give away our momentum. They forced Campbell out of the pocket often and hit him several times after a pass. Our pieced together LB'ers and secondary held their best WR to next to nothing.......I'd say that is an A+, no? The fake field goal did catch us napping but I charge specials with that one. Our O-line & BJ could have gotten perhaps a lower grade for failing in short yardage situations, but keep in mind Skins D was 4th best in NFL in 08 and now Haynesworth, so I gave them some grace. Sheridan did not blitz as often as Spags and I believe that is more b/c of our patch work secondary than lack of aggressiveness. Skins have alot of talent on both sides and we beat them better than score indicated. When they contained our running game, Eli came up with decent short/mid range pass to compensate the way he needed to. I am happy Ali, but not content, but for the first time playing together healthy, I stand by my report card for Game #1. Bring on the boyz...........It will be a tough game but Big Blue and the defense will be up for the game, trust me! I agree with Kotar 44 on his red zone assessment too. With Nicks out, we need to get Barden in the mix. Do you find this valuable? |

I would give the team as a whole a B+. Not going to blame Eli for fumble but the Int., absolutely. I think for first game, they got the win. There's room for improvement across the board, I think we'll all agree. WRers, I think that beyond the #4 spot, this team doesn't know what to do with spots 5,6and7. I'm getting a feeling that we will not see Barden anytime soon. Frustrating that we still have to settle for FG's. I agree with Ali about Dallas game. If they don't step up intensity, they will lose.

We will play better against Dallas and could not agree more that we need to as a whole. Specials were anything but. Tynes cannot reach the endzone and Hixon was average on returns. I was able to watch both of our rivals play yesterday and we all know they have talent BUT, the big scores were not a great indictaion of who they really are. Dellehome was lucky he got his contract extension last season because he was AWFUL! McNabb had only 79 yards passing and as a team less than 300 total yds and yet they scored 38 points. Panthers entire team stunk yesterday and were booed the entire game. I was not overly impressed by anything Philly did. A mediocre Tampa team outgained the boys 26-18 in first downs, but were victimized by crowding the LOS and got burned deep often. Like I had stated in an earlier post imo, Romo is a legitimate NFL QB and must be pressured ot he'll hurt you. NYG will do that IMO and unlike Sunday, where we rushed 4 most of the times, I believe Sheridan will blitz more often vs. Romo. What got lost in our win was that Big Blue consumed 36+ minutes of the clock against a significantly better defense than Dallas possesses. If we can do that all year, we win alot of games. We need to get the ball in the endzone Sunday and our game plan offensively speaking was still too "vanilla" for my liking. We have a ton of speed, let's use it to our advantage. Last point I'd like to share is that our 2009 squad will have to out hustle and out grind other teams to win. We do not have a quick strike offense or multiple TD throwing QB to dominate each week. If we control clock, turnover ratio and scrap with intensity and desire, we will be OK. Getting Ross and Boley back should help immensely this week! Looks like we'll also have to pick up an additional RB.

Excellente being able to watch a good portion of the game on the new NFL Red Zone channel:http://history.giants.com/video/7469422/New+York+Giants-Washington+Redskins+23-17+NFL+Week+1 Good team effort and a clutch win over a rival NFC East team in the last home opener at this Giants stadium. No clue why Giants stadium was half full when the Redskins tried an onside kick at the end of the game? Hope those Big Blue fans who left early will not do that again... It's a long season to say the Skins are over or Campbell is no threat. They will win many games this year. Their D is super tough and they run the ball which works in the NFL. If the GMen go to D.C. and lose it's 1-1. Most any QB would have looked bad against the Giants D yesterday. Giants could use their secondary to get an identity, no better time than against Dallas and their no-name WR corp. I liked going for it on 4th and 1 early even though they stuffed Jacobs, it sent a message. That down was as big as any down during the season. They all matter. Keeping cool heads will put "Fear" into your opponents. Less trash talk with more execution and football plays. Thanks to the Red Zone channel, I also saw the big plays Dallas made beating a TB team that has a terrible QB situation and a new coach. TB was able to run the ball all day, so will the Giants, that's what they do best. Dallas did display a vertical passing game, the TD's to Williams, Clayton and Austin stretched the Bucs D and Romo found the seams and open receivers. Those plays took some time to develop, time which will not be there against the GMen Defense on Sunday night. Tynes is looking like a fantasy kicking monster this year! Do you find this valuable? |

ok new season and the Giants win...missed most of the game at a kids B-day party, but what canya do. I did however see the highlights and all. Looks like they did a good job. As for Dallas...their O-line the OLD-line....none of em under 30...our D-line has no one over 30 with depth...by the second quarter Romo will be running for his life as his exhausted old-line will suckin wind and unable to keep up with Giants D-line rotation. LB's wil be bolstered by Boley returning, and maybe Sintim gets put on activeroster to add another pass rusher. Do you find this valuable? |

Okay I'll give a little - I called into Adam Schein and Rich Gannon this morning and asked about their thoughts - were the Giants a bit complacent... prep for next week.... they seemed to think the Giants did a pretty good job yesterday and Gannon felt relatively confident in their ability to make the adjustments needed for Dallas - although it will be a tough game. Of course I am happy for the W.

I think the Giants need some improvement before taking on the Cowboys in week 2. The Giants offense played a good first half but seemed slugish in ghe second half. The play calling included a lot of the old run, run, Pass. Plays once again are getting in too late. Eli had to use time outs and he also ends up snaping the ball with no time on the clock. This gives the defense an edge because the can just go full force. I agee overall the Giants played a good game and the offense did look great at times. I hope Ware is not out too long. The Defense again was good but especially on the Skins tuckdown drive there was no pressure on the quaterback. The D cannot give Romo that much time.I would give the Gaints an overall B+ rating. Even though kicking the football seemed to be a problem for Tynes. Go Big Blue

Ali, I love the Jekyl & Hyde skit girl! LOL den gave an overall B+, rbeblasr gave NYG a B+, my report card adds up to a B+, Hibbits was playing pin the tail on the Cowboys but liked the replays of the game, Kotar44 gave a "thumbs up", Gannon liked our performance, so why did you and pops see it as a so so effort? Our offense held the ball for 36+ minutes vs one of the best defenses in NFL and our defense gave up a late 'prevent" defense TD, not before they harassed Skins QB and sacked him thrice. We held Skins best two players, Portis and Moss to zippo. The only real problem that is glaring is RED ZONE deficiency and some injuries to our team. Perhaps my dear Ali, you were expecting a blow out ( I was not), which it easily could have been, however the 6 point victory was exactly what Vegas wanted it to be......spread was 6 points. Let me ask you this question; if we won 13 games exactly the way we won today, ball control and great defense, (3 sacks, TD off a fumble recovery and only 17 pts given up) would you not be satisfied with our GGGGGGGmen and begin looking up flights to Miami? I love your quest for perfection as it pertains to Big Blue.....that is how you keep winning, but this really was a solid win against a very decent divisional foe. Washington WILL go on to surprise some people. Dallas has more upside on Offense, but much less to offer on the other side of the football. They MUST play to stop our running game and Eli will have some great opportunities to hit big plays on Sunday. If he does, we WILL win. Our defense with Ross & Boley will be flying around the football and make a game Romo earn every yard. 1 Down 15 to"G"o. You and I need to talk some Canes football............we are almost back!!

That's just me - perfectionist. Believe me, I am trying to take a queue from Coughlin's book because it suited me very well. :) Maybe I don't have quite the same respect for the 'Skins that others do, and since we were so close and had a hard time in the red zone, a few turn-overs, and few penalties and mistakes we should not have had - I was nervous that we came close on this game. I definitely see the Skins' weapons - but I don't put them in the caliber with Dallas or the Eagles (Garcia - yuck - can't stand him). Perhaps I just need to get past Dallas to be satisfied. Dallas to me = Demarcus Ware (being compared now to the REAL LT), Jason Whitten, Patrick Crayton, Roy Williams, Marion, Tashard and Felix. Lot of weapons. No, the whole Dee in Dallas is not perfect, but Demarcus Ware is. And yes - if we won 13 games the same way we played the 'Skins - I would be thrilled! Do you find this valuable? |

Dallas does indeed have some offensive weapons and our defense will have to play relentless as a unit. The biggest foe we face Sunday imo is the 12th man. This being Dallas' first game in mega million/billion stadium, it will bring out the Texan fans in droves. As critical as I can be of Eli at a times of his ill advised, off balanced INT's, he does seem to play a bit better away from NY, so he will be a huge part of our success if we win. If Ross plays healthy and Boley is who they say he is, I do not see the boyz putting up big numbers on our "crazed dogs". Similarly, TB ran all over their D with a Cadillac, but we have two Rolls Royces, so Dallas will have to commit more players to the run, thus giving Eli ample shots at putting up big numbers and moving the chains. I agree with you and I am certain Tom C has driven home the point that turnovers, fake punts, interceptions and fumbles have got to cease and decist. I cannot wait until Sunday evening. If we are to be the best, we must beat the pretty good teams in their yard.....LET'S GET READY TO ROMOBLE!!!!

When other teams' offenses get inside the 5, they often play fake and then toss to the wide-open TE in the end zone. But the Giants always try to push across the goal line by brute force. That fails more often than not. When will the right idea finally occur to them? Hint: Gilbride won't be the offensive coordinator when it happens.

"Back in September I made this comment and over the next 6 games we will see what our 2009 NY Giant team is truly made up of. We all have had to come to grips with the fact that our current Bunch of Blue's Brothers injuries included are not in the Top Tier of NFL, HOWEVER we also know that we still have enough talent to win the NFC East and make the playoffs IF we scrap for every yard, limit stupid penalties and win turnover ratio. 2mro, we face a young and upcoming team/coach in their yard. They got out of the gates like "thorough-breds", but have more recently resembled "donkey kong". This team's season is on the line, KO is gonna start and Denver's coaches must be drooling at the prospect of playing our porous pass defense. We MUST get more pressure from the interior of our defensive line. Canty, Robbins, Bernard, and Cofield will be the keys to victory for me this week. The pressure has got to come from them, forcing a gimpy Orton to move in the pocket. Remember when we would have all passed a polygraph believing our front 4 could be one of the best all time NFL D lines? THE TIME IS NOW! On the offensive side, do you think Brian Dawkins is loving the opportunity to educate his squad on NYG tendencies? BJ MUST run with conviction and punish defenders like he used to. AB will not likely make the trip so Danny will have to help "Ware" down the D for Eli and the kids. I am naming this game REDEMPTION, particularly for Gilbride, Sheridan, our offense and defensive lines and Brandon Jacobs. IF, IF, IF we win this game, we have another bye in essence to prepare for our most hated rivals and stretch run to our 2009 campaign. NYG NYG NYG Do you find this valuable? |

yes, I know. More evidence that this is not the "complete" well oiled team we all thought it'd be and that even the most online, optimistic, obsessed, over-the-top, on looking Giants fan, cannot be certain what Giant team will show up! Ross,Canty and Boley's fresh legs should help the defense and coming off a recent bye week, should be an advantage for NYG in a short week of preparation.
