What it means to be a Giants fan
Jul 23 2009, 9:14 PM EDT
Hey Everyone....thought Id mix it up with kind of a different topic. Ive been getting my regular dose of NFL / NFC East blogs, rumour mills, news etc lately and it has lead me to contemplate recently what sets Giants fans apart from the rest....in essence, what makes a Giants fan unique? Its funny, because I think you can tell alot about a person by the team they cheer for. Maybe Im reading too deeply into it but when I come across an Eagles fan for instance...Im instantly curious whether they would spit on my girlfriend if I wasnt looking while at a game( just kidding, but you I think you know what Im getting at). Pats fans remind me of clone storm troopers from star wars...following the evil empire ( I guess that would make Belli-cheat Darth Vader). I guess if I was to blow our own horn, I would say that we have a real tradition of winning and losing with dignity and respect. I think that is a credit to the Mara family and all theyve stood for, as well as the culture of the entire organization that has been instilled throughout. We seem to be able to forgive and be patient (#17, LT etc). We embrace and build upon our history and nurture our talent giving them every chance to suceed through loyalty and patience (Rich Seubert, and maybe this year we hope, Sinorice Moss). At the end of the day I think we're all very proud to be Giants fans, beyond what happens on the field. Of course its a business...but I think even business can be run with heart! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

This is a tough question.Fan is short for fanatic!Stereotype's can be deceiving.I know a few Eagles fans that are alright guys, their miserable, but alright.Something in the water in Philly.I know one Browns fan I like, respect. If you think Eagles fans are terrible, try a Browns fan on for size! These guys make some Eagle fans look like nancy girl scouts!Delusional!Every team has obsessive, intolerable fans! Every team has fans they can be proud of.I can remember a bottle throwing incident in Giants stadium,on national TV,that did not make me proud! Some of us are more patient than others. What it means to be a Giants fan?Loyalty,Dignity,Pride,Respect.Traditions,History, built on those words! Has coach Jimmy McGinty said in that classic movie"The Replacements"..."Heart,You Gotta Have Heart!"Giants fans have heart, passion! I wake up every day proud to be a Giants fan! I check this site almost daily to share thoughts, debate, argue even, with people who embody those four words(mostly,Ha,Ha!). Looking forward towards a season that I have no doubt will provide me with more than a few reasons to be a proud N.Y.Giants fan!

I'm struggling with the "unique" aspect. Every sports fan thinks their team is special or the best and like my twin bro den said not every NYG fan is the same. I will say the majority of Giant fans I know root for Big Blue for the following reasons: family tradition For our family growing up it was church Sunday morning (Dear Lord, plz help us beat the Bears in Chicago2day) LOL, then lunch in front of the tv watching NYG while mom started Italian gravy on the stove. Community pride: If the windows in your house were open you'd here the neighbors hooting and hollering with every big play and if you saw them later maybe taking out the trash you'd share some thoughts, curse out the refs together or agree on who should be traded : O Your team added to a sense of togetherness with the "area people" & other Big Blue believers. Intelligence: I believe most Giant fans are knowlegeable and objective about how their team's abilities and how it matches up, unlike so many Dolphin fans down here I hear describing their team. Toughness: NYG has history of employing hard nosed, blue collared, low profile players that get the job done w/o too much glitter. The proverbial No Quit attitude has always been our motto. Loyalty: I remember how hard it was 2 B a Giant fan during the lean 70's and early 80's, BUT we yelled just as loud, hoped just as much and looked forward to the draft more than ever. LOL Class: I think most NFLers would say that NYG fans are good sports when we do not win, as long as we are not antagonized, that is........then the toughness thing comes into play again LOL Inspiration: For me I have always related to alot of the players we drafted that beat the odds and made it with a great work ethic Players like Jim Burt (walk on) Phil Simms (Moorehaed State) and so many others overachieved and somehow that helped me as an athlete and continues to inspire me to be a better husband, father and person.

As a relative newbie Giants fan compared to many of you's I would add that the franchise is the model NFL Org and (I hate to say it) "Americas Team!" Sure Dallas may have been that NFL team in our country at one point but in today's global economy with instant communication and the added importance of New York City after 911, how can the Giants not be the NFL's Team USA! They are to me!!

G-11,Italian gravy!...Mom always liked you best!Roble, hard to argue with Cowboy's has America's team.Statistically,anyway.Statistically they are only team in league that has a season ticket holder in every state in union!Only team with season ticket holders in europe(england)! They lead in merchandise sales!Their ownership prior to JeRRy's arrival was on par with any team in league!Hard to argue...

To me, being a Giants fan means being part of a brotherhood of loyal, passionate, and knowledgeable football fans. Fans who live and die each week with their team. Fans who will not tolerate mediocrity. Being a fan of a 1st class organization that will not go out and throw money at a player like Terrell Owens. Owners that do not make a spectacle of themselves like Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder. Owners that see the big picture of the NFL. A team that believes in drafting, developing and primarily building from within. It means getting together on Sundays with the same group of guys, no matter where we are in our lives, to watch football and forget everything else in the world for three hours.

To me, it means 40 years of dedication, faith, hope, perserverance, loss and triumph. Its the history. Its the TRADITION. Its the embodiment of everything that I hold to be American. Its the story of Class, and respect. Its about family and friends. Its about the pride of rooting for an organization that has seen the bottom and risen to the top, and did that with honor and more class. It was a journey, and continues to be one. I was a small ball when Pete Rozelle "sold" the American public on the NFL. I bought into it, and was hooked ever since. It just so happened that at that time I lived here in NY, and was lucky to be "turned on to" the NYGiants, who were one of the storied franchises of the emerging NFL. So for those last 40 years I have been a part, (albeit a small one) of the history that will be passed to my two sons (even tho they don't like football- my loss), of being what is known as a FANATICAL NYGiants supporter. Its about living vicariously through the game, and learning that the NFL and my Giants can overcome the odds in life and succeed, both on the field, and off. And doing that, with our heads held high.

I think loyalty is the big thing in being a Giants fan. You have to take the long view. There are going to be winning years and losing years, good games and bad games. A really good fan sticks with his team even when the going gets tough, refusing to be a frontrunner (a fan of winning teams only). When you really care, you sit down and watch each game, no matter how bad your team is. When the turnaround finally comes, that makes winning all the sweeter, and winning the Super Bowl extra-special.

What it means to be a Giants fan? Answer everything opposite of a raider fan! Win with dignity and take a loss with our head still held high, and if you ever been to a raider game you will know exactly what I mean.

@ arlington: nice topic here. No doubt for me it is identifying with the personalities of the owner-s, players and the style of football that teams plays. I see myself a lot like I see big Blue.......hard work, grind it out and when successful make it look like you've done it before. Talent, confident but not arrogant. Team oriented, not individualists. Carrying the torch from one generation to the next one coming up telling them things about players that stats do not reflect. Pride in being from NY, NJ area & being able to take criticism because of the stereotype of being an aggressive person/State yet remaining humble after handing out a beating to another team. Expecting everyone to give their all beginning with management scouting talent and spending money to keep us in the race down and the everyone sticking together no matter what. Being a Giant fan is a big part of my life, an outlet and inspiration all in one.
