Eli & the Kids

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio interview with NY Giants QB Eli Manning and Head Coach Coughlin was positive in terms of the young wide receiver corp, but that's how all coaches and players come acoss! Thanks Den.

-Over the final 23 quarters of the season, Manning threw zero touchdown passes to his teammates who play receiver. And that group included veteran Amani Toomer, who has since joined Burress in the category of “former Giant.”

On the positive side, both Coach Coughlin and Eli like the fact that you can get more done as a team when players show up and are ready to work hard at practice unlike Plaxico:

-“It sends the right message,” Coughlin said. “It tells everybody that every guy is here for the same reason and trying to help our team be as good as it can be. It is very difficult to get that done when we are not here. Guys are here working. You have the older guys sharing with the younger guys. You have that natural process. And obviously you are trying to create the team concept with everything that you do. And to have everyone here certainly helps escalate that.”

and

-“It’s not exactly like starting over, but we are trying right now to get on the same page,” said Manning. “I’m trying to learn their body language. I’m trying to talk to them on the field and in the huddle and in the meetings, trying to develop chemistry. You don’t want any bad habits to develop.”

The projected WR starters are Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon, with Sinorice Moss in the slot. Mario Manningham and David Tyree are in the fourth and fifth spots, while rookies Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden ramain at the bottom, for now.

Should be a fun and interesting 2009 season finding how Eli & the Kids progress, move the chains and score TD's! Any thoughts?

I think most giant fans consider Eli a great quarterback. I think he is already better than his brother Payton. I also think that he is definety going to keep the giants winning games. In the end only time will be the factor or if Eli can win another Super Bowl that would do the trick. As for the new kids only time will tell, good hard practice does not always result in the same results on the playing field. I still think this is one of the better drafts the Giants have had in a long time. Do you find this valuable?

OK, assuming rbeblasr is not Eli's wife or Roble pulling my leg with another screenname(LOL), please sir/maam defend your opinion that he is already better than his brother. Please put down the pipe for just a second and educate me on this one. Peyton has thrown for 4k+ yards for 9 out of his 11 NFL seasons, has a 95% QB rating, 333 Td's and a 64% completion percentage. When all is said and done, he will be in every conversation around any water cooler or watering hole when the topic of who was the best QB of all time comes up. I LOVE your optimism that perhaps one day our QB, the younger Manning, will get a mention in that debate too,(I pray you are correct) but please refrain from being mendatious and do not insult football loyalists on this site or any other venue in saying that he has "already" superceded that feat; that is not an objective or intelligent statement. Saying that, many of you know how much I appreciate what Phil Simms meant to our organization and that he should be in the HOF, but even the great Phil Simms cannot be mentioned in the same category of QB that Peyton Manning is and he has not yet finished compiling his accomplishments and steller resume. IMO, Peyton is on his way to sharing the same platform with Elway, Montana, Unitas, Marino, Fouts, Favre. I respect all opinions but occasionally facts outweigh what any of us may think. I believe this is one of those times. I share your sentiments that we did have yet another excellent draft. Do you find this valuable?

I only have one screenname, RRoble, ha! GMen11 and others, for the sake of intelligent banter I will toss out this, Eli does have a Super Bowl ring, so in many ways he has a better NFL history than Dan Fouts or your fav coaches QB, Dan Marino, simply because they both never won a SB. I keep hearing how this past draft was outstanding and I agree, however, time will tell. Yep, the new Kids on the Block better have a leader come out of the pack by game 1. Does WR Steve Smith have the kind of personality to lead with his mouth, his actions, both or neither? Do you find this valuable?

G-11..Down boy,let go of the nice man's pant leg,Heel!...been there, done that!So its OK to partake in a little smoke but accuse a guy of drinking!LOL!You still cant comfirm that anyway...never let facts get in the way of a good story!I will agree that young Eli has a little more work to do.He certainly has'nt surpassed big brother yet,not sure I would put him in top 3or 5 in league,I do like him,but too soon to start erecting statues! Curious about this alleged poll of Giant fans who think Eli is a "great" QB.(He's no Alexander!)I must have been absent that day! rbeblasr is there any left?!Somebody open a window!Better Question is why Simms isn't in HOF yet? den/nyg..........nice post; still trying to catch my breath from laughing or the smoke......whatever!! LOL Simms did everything he could do to get invite in HOF. Until last year, he was never he mentioned for such status.....he's got the numbers, he's got the rings, and the MVP trophies, but perhaps he "just won baby" and nothing else?
RR, my blues brother, there are a few ways I could respond to your Eli vs. the ring-less Marino, & Fouts point. I will choose this statement. Ringo Starr made ALOT of money and great fame with one of the best rock bands ever, BUT at the risk of making a RUSH to judgement...........he ain't no Neil Peart!!!! Something said for supporting casts perhaps?

Got into arguement with a baseball purist of sorts about how their guys get in based on stats...Homeruns,Hits,Strikeouts.Wins,etc.My arguement was that they call it THE HALL of FAME!Not THE HALLof STATISTICS!Emphasizing your Rock and Roll HOF theory.I don't know if Giants win 86 Super Bowl without Simm's performance. If it was football Hall of Stats there would be alot of changes to be made!Simms is HOFer.So are some other guys that aren't in yet!Debate for another day.I'm not sure if this helps your arguement with RR or hurts it G-11.Hard to think straight what with all the laughing and catching of breath...I need a snack is anybody else hungry? one of the problems with the HOF is that the criteria can be a bit vague, similar to that of what MVP is. Case in point: Pete Rose was to baseball what Walter payton was to professional football, yet he is not in upstate NY. If HOF is based on ability/results/awards/records/effort, Charlie Hustle is a SHOE-IN. If delinquent behavior gets added, suddenly Canton & Cooperstown begin to lean out some. Besides the many accolades Simms possesses, (in addition to being 1 of only 5 NFL QB's to throw for 500+ in a game) what makes his "gold mold" eligible to move into Canton for me, is what he overcame on his way to being a consistant leader of the offense. The pressure of being drafted 7th overall out of Moorehead State (2nd only to Whatsamatter U), being knocked around alot & often injured while fighting Brunner for starting job, and playing for a lousy team in NY, without the quality receivers to throw to, Simms never made excuses; never gave an inch. He would hold the ball to the very last minute, allowing his rec's to showcase their 5.3 (40) speed and throw a nice ball, knowing very well he was gonna get lit up. He'd get up, dig the grass out of his mask and other orifaces, pat his O-line and his butt and do it again the very next play. Maybe the reason he has not been nominated yet is because only Blue faithful that watched him year after year, know those intangibles. I mean who would ever guess that Phil has more total yards passing than Bradshaw, Namath, Staubach, Griese, Baugh, Starr, Aikman, Young & Dawson; made alot of money over the years on that bet! He never embarrassed the league and helped resurrect a dormant franchise, along with LT...I'll stop there; b/c it's almost time for my annual letter to HOF voters on Simms' behalf. I M serious and no pipe involved in this one! LOL Do you find this valuable?

I don't think the Giants drafted Hakeem Nicks as #1 so he could sit on the bench. After last year's collapse, I expect him to replace Hixon as a starter. Also, William Beatty was drafted as a replacement for Kareem McKenzie. Do you find this valuable?

I believe you may be on to something with Beatty,Mckenzie was in and out of games alot towards end of season.I do think we will see alot of Nicks this season but not so sure it will be as a starter, but you are correct most teams dont draft first round for bench players.Even QB's are getting thrust into action earlier and earlier. Gmen11 have you finished your letter to the HOF voters yet?I'm sure you made every valid argument for Phil Simms.I do hope you left out the part about his college being just ahead of ole WSAMU.it's a little known fact that Bullwinkle is a proud alumnus(Rocky was given hororary degree some years ago)and we would not want to offend Moooses(Boris Badenough impression)everywhere.Just looking out for your well being though dont ask me why! For some reason I think this kid from Wisconsin has a big Rookie season in front of him. With all that defensive talent in the NFC East this is going to be the year of the H back for the Giants. Eli will look for him all season, just a feeling. Wonder if Beatty has the potential to be a road grader for the RB's this season or will be need to get stronger 1st? Love a good pancake block! just my luck, Rocky & Bullwinkle decide to attend Moorehead State........I am glad I left that out of my letter to HOF voters, I meant to say that Moorehead State would destroy Murray State on a neutral field....natasha dolling.....please let em know I was only kidding.......den thanks for having my back; I will be more careful in the woods now.
RR, I'm with you on the H-back. Benched 225 for 28X and they say has great separation quickness.....just what the doctor ordered!

Actually G-11 what I was trying to point out was that Bullwinkle attended WhatsamatterU.Sorry for the confusion.Nice choice in your profile pic! I agree with both of you that Beckham will be interesting to watch. He can play any of three possible positions and he has speed to go with his 28X reps. Do you find this valuable?

Slackers no,ProBowlers also no.The only offensive player to make the Probowl in the 80's was P.Simms(twice) and D.Meggett(1 time.89).In the early 90's R. Hampton went.Eli has had several ProBowlers(Burress,Barber,Shockey,Snee,Ohara...)Oh snap,I sound just like G-11!Somebody stop me!NO!!!!! Do you find this valuable?

As far as Eli......maybe the younger WR's will actually help Eli get better barrings, he does show promise. Who knows maybe being the big boy in the group will make him grow up a little. Do you find this valuable?
