Say it ain't so Fran!
Jun 3 2009, 4:55 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 3 2009, 4:55 PM EDT
Fran Tarkenton told 790 The Zone in Atlanta (via the Minneapolis Star Tribune):

“I think [Favre] has been a great flamboyant quarterback, but he has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback that I’ve ever seen,” Tarkenton said. “Look at his final game in a Packers uniform [the 2007 NFC title game]. He blew that game against the Giants. He’s playing against Eli Manning. I love Eli Manning, but he’s still not a great quarterback. He’s not Peyton yet, or Tom Brady. He’s just a guy. And [the Packers] are playing at home, and they’re in a tight situation, they went to overtime and [Favre] throws the interception that allows [the Giants] to come back and win the game.”

Thanks Den for the heads up! Not sure how to take this comment from Fran (a childhood idol) about Eli (my fav all-time Giants QB) going into 2009. Glad he 'loves' Eli at least! How about you?

Consider that these comments are coming from the guy who, post NFL, became king of the infomercial and host of That's Incredible! Check it out:

Let me say this from the outset of the post that I will try and be sensitive to my Big Blue faithful Eli fans, but at the same time, interpret Fran's statements as objectively as possible. Fran Tarkenton was a GREAT QB make no mistake about that. Over the years, I have come to appreciate Favre's abilities but Fran's comment about Brett is a bullseye. He IS great, however, he has made more inadvised throws than any QB in his "talent pool". Then Fran said he loves Eli (positive) but he's not great YET (semi-positive) but in most NY fans eyes, a true statement. I DO appreciate all of our Eli fans & respect your opinions and love for him, however, you all must be aware that alot of NY'ers are not as affectionate with Eli as you might be. Here is a recent quote from perhaps the most respected Sportswriter in the Big Apple, Sal Pauluntonio" But Manning relied a lot on Burress, who often drew a double-team and used his size and wingspan to convert poor throws into big plays. Right now, there is no replacement for that threat combination -- no go-to guy who can make Manning look good when he lapses into one of his "frequent bouts of inconsistency." The entire link: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfceast/0-11-6/Manning-adjusting-to-new-look-WR-corps.html. I lived in NY for 28 years and I'm still in touch with BIG BLUE friends and family and the overwhelming feeling about Eli is a "roll of the dice". The thought being that he has played behind arguably the best O-lines, with best RB's and WR's in our illustrious franchise history and is still not a reliable "GIVEN" before a game. I will say that like Roger Federer, Eli is a passive gentleman and a difficult guy to dislike personally. IMO Fran was tougher on Brett than Eli but still accurate x 2 .sorry Ali/RR, but thanx for giving me the hope I dont get from NY friends. Do you find this valuable?

More info today on Tarkenton's interview. He states later that the steriods era started in Pittsburgh.Say's Fran about super bowl "you're out during warm-ups and you look over and see some of those guys, like Courson or Webster and their huge..." Well as facts sometime get in the way of a good story...Mike Webster was a 245 pound rookie who did'nt play in that game and Courson was still in college!Me thinks maybe ole Fran might have misremembered! Den, he did take alot of hits!! LOL Saying the Steelers were the 1st to use steroids, when Alzado and many others were around sounds premature to say the least. Saying that, there is no doubt the Pittsburg Steelers, their O-line particularly, (Kolb, Courson) liked their "juice", by their own admission. I did not hear/read the interview so it's hard for me to wonder what is motivating him to comment about the Steelers. I do think he has earned the right to speak on Viking issues and IMO, Brett is stretching any fan's welcome with his on again off again retirement merry go round....I never thought I'd miss hearing about T.O.!!! j/k I still don't. I'm sure this is some frustration that Fran never really got the recognition he deserved or won a ring though he played hard enough for it, but sounds to me like Fran should be more responsible with such strong accusations about non team issues. the last thing I need is Ivan Putski looking for me so wrestling is safe for now! Santa retired and went on nutrisystems; you won't even recognize him, and as for the easter bunny & tooth fairy, they are currently in the ranks of the 9.4% unemployment rate....this post is "decaying" quickly........Regarding Favre, can you hear The Clash in the background....."should I stay or should I go now"? he is a winner but I hope he stays retired or the Vikings might have something to say about who represents the NFC in Miami. I believe Fran has been away from the game too long. I think Eli will prove himself to the doubters in the long run. I still do not understand why Eli does not get the respect from the media and players. The NFL east is one of the thoughest divisions in the league and Eli has the Giants up there most seasons. # 1 what makes a great qb is smart decisions on and off the field. # 2 When you play the way Eli
did leading up to the superbowl and through last year you are a great qb. As far as the divisional loss against Philly. Name 1 qb who has not lost a playoff game ( especially with out a big threat reciever ).
