Recent books about the NY Giants
Jan 18 2009, 12:33 PM EST
I'm trying to put together this page in some chronological order, but there are recent books that should be mentioned. I went to a talk yesterday by sportswriter Jack Cavanaugh who has just published "Giants Among Men, How Robustelli, Huff, Gifford, and the Giants Made New York a Football Town and Changed the NFL." Mr. Cavanaugh gave a great talk and what I've read in the book is very interesting - not just about the Giants but about New York and about the other key teams of that era - it looks like a worthwhile read!

I'm very happy to see 'The GIANTS of New York' on this list.I consider this book to be nothing short of a bible!I highly recommend this read for any GIANTS fan looking to delve deep into the history of this great franchise.Other books I would recommend:from Macmillan Pub. Great Teams,Great Years series-New York GIANTS by Jim Tergian (1973).Mainly covers the games & players from 1956-1963 (6 championship appearances in 8 years, not bad). From Harper & Row Pub.-'THE GIANTS' from the Polo Grounds to SB XXI by Richard Whittingham (1987).And no GIANTS book collection can be complete w/o John Steinbreder's 'GIANTS' 70 Years of Championship Football or Jerry Izenberg's NEW YORK GIANTS-75 Years.

Martin75 I will look into those you mentioned with great interest. A little off topic(Giants) I read Tony Dungys book last year "Quiet Strength"highly recommend to any football fan.

"I dream in Blue" by Roger Director is a must read. Story of Middle aged mans lifelong obsession with N.Y.Giants. Follow him has he follows the 2006 Giants from training camp through the end of the season. Tiki Barbers last season has a Giant!

"A team to believe in" the story of the world Champion 2007 Giants written by Coach Tom Coughlin. Book follows Coach Coughlin from his childhood to his playing days and through numerous coaching jobs. Book follows Giants game by game while intertwining Coach Coughlins Life and experiences and offers incredible insight to what coaches think, how they prepare and relate to players. Another must read!

I whole-heartedly agree about "Giants among Men....", and the other book mentioned, "The GIANTS: From the Polo...."; both are excellent books. There is another that the title escapes me right now, but it chronicles the Mara familys earliest days, and Wellingtions growing up with the Giants-could be the Polo Grounds book. However, I think we were all made aware of our own Fan site members book; Jeffery Feketes tome. I have not read that, as he says it was just published. Anyone here delve into that one?

I have read Jeffery Feketes book, 'Making the big game, tales of an accidental spectator'. While the book is about attending Super Bowl 42. It is about the journey and the man moreso than the Giants. It is a good read but has little to do with the Giants. Relative wins ticket lottery and can't attend. Jeffery Fekete is given the opportunity to attend. Tickets in N.J., he lives in California. Acquiring the tickets and ensuing last minute arrangements to go are intertwined with stories about authors life.

"Eli Manning" "The making of a quarterback" by Ralph Vacciano. Very good read. Follows scouts assessments and draft, THE TRADE, and eventual Super Bowl championship. Interesting stories by Ernie Accorsi. Scouting reports, and draft day stories. Also touches a little on Kerry Collins's relationship and eventual departure from Giants. Offers up other options that may have been drafted by Giants ahead of QB position had trade not happened. Another must read for any Giants fan.

@den/nyg I am curious if Eli shared why he did not want to play for the San Diego Chargers and what advice if any Archie or Peyton gave him during that time. Thank you

Mutual decision on the part of Eli and Archie. Archie did not want Eli's career to mirror his. San Diego had a track record at that time of not being successful, akin to the Saints in Archie's day. Archie wanted Eli to go somewhere with a proven track record, quality ownership and front office, coaches. Archie for the most part pushed that decision.

@ den/nyg thanks for your response. It will be interesting to see how that decision plays out concerning what his legacy will be when his career is over. It does not seem to have hurt QB great John Elway too much if at all.On a different note, has anyone heard if Tuck has had surgery yet? I feel our success/failure next season will depend alot on how players like he, AB, Jacobs, O'Hara and Kenny heal up. Of course we have some holes to fill on defense in particular. Hearing that Antrell Rolle is going to be released from Arizona. He will come with big price tag, but what Giant fan would not dream about Kenny and Rolle playing safety together next year for our team. I'm pretty sure they both played @ the University of Miami during the same time. Do you find this valuable? |

Funny you mention John Elway. Ernie Accorsi was the GM who drafted Elway (Colts)only to have the owner trade him (Denver)out from under him. Accorsi was on the other end of that deal this time. The trade of Eli and Rivers was illegal(*) but no one in the league, teams or otherwise called them on it. *teams cannot trade players already drafted until end of draft. Teams cannot tell another team who to take in the event of said trade. Both of these things occured that day. San Diego requested Philip Rivers. Don't have an answer on Tuck. I know surgery was an option but not only option. It was an old injury from college days that he reinjured when Flozell tripped him.
