The best NY Football Giants Head Coach is...

With nice choices like Coach Tom Coughlin, Bill Parcells and Steve Owen, it is tough to pick. Maybe it's Allie Sherman, Alex Webster or Jim Fassel or could it be Jim Fassel, Jim Lee Howell or the 1st, Bob Fowell, who in 1925 took the Giants to an 8-4 record. I say if Coach Coughlin wins this year's Super Bowl it has to be him! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

The role of the coach is so much different now than it was in the early years that's it's hard to compare Steve Owen and Tom Couglin. I had the good fortune to meet Steve Owen and his brother Bill a number of times when I was young - they were both very impressive men. But Jim Lee Howell has a special place in my view of coaching and of management in general because he was not afraid to have people working for him who were more talented than he was and he didn't try and take credit for their work. Maybe his style would not have worked if he didn't have Lombardi and Landry as his assistants, but it perfectly suited the situation and the team enjoyed great success 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Coach Howell hired both Coach Lombardi and Coach Landry, incredible! Terrific post, thanks. I noticed I wrote Coach Fassel's name twice when I meant to write Coach Dan Reeves, he also had a nice run little as the Giants Head Coach. I read that Coach Owen made the Pro Football Hall of Fame the year I was born, 1966!! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

This question depends on the criteria: most wins overall, most championships, or some combination of both. What do you do about the early coaches who did not win Superbowls because there weren't any? If you divide the coaches between Superbowl era and non-Superbowl era coaches, that would be a more accurate comparison. Who are the winningest coaches in Giants history in terms of games won and winning percentage? Which coach has one the most championships? Anyone have the stats? 2  out of 2 found this valuable. If you go by wins, then Steve Owen had 151 wins from '31-53. Second is, amazingly, Bill Parcells from '83-90 with 77 wins. If you go by championships, Owen had 2 ('34 &38) and Parcells had 2 ('86 & '90) - Howell and Coughlin only have one each. If you go by winning percentage (at least 4 seasons), then it's Howell (.663) and Parcells (.611). For comparison, Owen came in at .602 and Coughlin is currently at .547. So, there's a good case for Owen as the pre-Superbowl era best coach and Parcells as the best Superbowl era Giants' coach. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

One correction - Coughlin's winning percentage is .588. Do you find this valuable?

Excellent points! One thing though, only Coach Coughlin Giant career has several more years ahead to up his win %, collect more Super Bowl trophies and add more solid years as the NY Giants Head Coach... Do you find this valuable?

Right you are! Only Coughlin can improve his situation, the rest are in the books. If he can lead the Giants to another Superbowl win this season, his stock definitely rises. Do you find this valuable?

DD56, was just reading your post that said Steve Owens had 151 wins as the Giants Head Coach from 1931-1953 , unreal! Even though I know little about Coach Owens, he now shoots up to the Best Giants coach on my list. Do you find this valuable?

Here again were are faced with comparing different eras and also what aspect of coaching that we are comparing? XO's, motivational, assessor of talent? Guys like George Allen ruled by fear and was successful in that era when most football players were not playing for the love of money as much as for the love of the game, Same could be said for Chuck Noll, Don Shula, & Tom Landry. Free agency also compounds the problem of comparing coaches, b/c coaches of yesteryear had the same core of players for much longer periods of time. Consider the 70's Steelers and the fact that their roster was in tact for almost a decade! All things considered Bill Parcells gets the nod in my book as the best coach in NYG history. The NFL was/is much more complicated & filled with many more teams in the 80's & 90's and continues to be, much more than it was in the old days, not to mention that the game is more of a business now too. So much more for a coach to facilitate. Parcell's best asset imo is finding young, talented players and knowing where to start when building a solid team. He was also one of the best modern day "motivators of millionaires", while still maintaining the old school, "my way or the highway" philosophy. His XO's can be debated but like any other great leader he was wise enough to employ guys like Billy Belichick & a GREAT offensive coordinator like Ron Earheart. Since his 3-12-1 maiden season with Big Blue over 25 years ago, our franchise has been a respectable opponent in the NFL and has won 3 NFL WORLD TITLES. The about-face can be attributed to BP, the owners and great GM's we've been blessed with. Final note: The TUNA was the type of player's coach that @ the end of the day, even if he busted your hump, every "star-kissed" him...tell em Charlie sent ya!! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Yes, gmen11, that's why I think it's best not to compare pre and post Superbowl Era coaches. I stand by Owen as the Giants pre-Superbowl era best and Parcells as the best head man during the Superbowl era. Do you find this valuable?
