IMO, it's still The Great Phil Simms, but Eli is closing the gap fast.

not even close, not consistent enough yet let him do it for a few more years not 5 or 6 games in a row

If he wins another super bowl this year he may be really really close but the real factor will be his inconsistency. Just when you think is continuing to move forward he has game like he had in Cleveland.

We will always be grateful for the "pass" to Tyree that was actually a much better catch than throw, but truth be known, Eli is not nearly the Quarterback/leader that Phil Simms was to the Giants. Consider the fact that Simms never had a wideout go to the ProBowl or receivers with the talent that Manning has had, and yet ol' reliable is 20th all time in passing yardage, SB21 MVP 22-25 with 2 passes dropped and Pro Bowl MVP. He has two Superbowl rings and although people will point out the Hostettler won SB XXV, #11 was having his best year when he went down in week 14 vs. the Bills (92.7 QB rating) and the Giants were 11-2 and had clinched the division. Similarly, Simms never had trouble throwing the "rock" @ the Meadowlands because he threw a better spiral than Eli in the wind. What made Phil Simms the best NYG QB of all time was his fiery spirit and will to win. Simms is the 3rd most sacked QB of all time and yet he'd get up from getting drilled, pat his OL on the butt and complete the next pass. He was a general. Eli, up to this point is still inconsistant. You never know what you're going to get from him. See vs. Eagles 01/11/09. I'd also point out that Justin Tuck deserved SB 42 MVP and the defense for harassing Tom Brady all day and holding that potent O to 14pts. When Eli does not have Plaxico who is a huge target and top shelf receiver, he struggles. Don't want to ramble but Eli is no YA Tittle either. Manning still has time, but up until now, I see no reason to believe he will ever be worthy of the title best NYG QB ever.

As of now, it is very close but I do not think so. Eli has proven he can play under pressure and win the big game despite tremendous criticism and doubt. However, until Eli duplicates his playoff performances of 2007-08 we cannot proclaim him the best of all time. No Giants quarterback has won more than one Super Bowl while with the team as a starter. For now I believe Eli comes in a close second behind Phil Simms. When it is all said and done, it is my belief that Eli Manning will be the greatest Quarterback in New York Giants history.

I love this topic because it comes up alot and I respect the various opinions posted. I would be interested in hearing from Big Blue fans, fortunate enough to have seen Tittle, Tarkenton, & Simms play for Gmen and compare the four QB's respectively and proportionately to the talent or lack of talent around them at that time and answer this same question. I watched Fran & Phil but only video clips of Y.A. & all things considered Eli is fourth on this list and a good distance away from third!!!! If Super Bowl wins is a big standard for great QB's, then Marino, Kelly, Fouts, etc. do not = Eli Manning or Trent Dilfer? Negative.......I have an old Giant Newsweekly, from 1993 whereby the late great Bill Walsh talks about how he had planned on taking Simms with San Fran's first pick but NYG surprised him & beat him to it. He goes on further to say that had he gotten the blonde haired kid, things would have wound up the same for 49'ers in terms of SB wins and success.......that is a mouthful from a great coach and shows how important the supporting cast is to a QB.

G-11, well said but now you're tossing in ex-Seahawk qb Trent Dilfer after the David Carr name drop in your other post, luv it! How about adding Neil O'Donnell, Rich Gannon and Rex Grossman to that small SB no-name list ! No question, having the talent around you is required to reach a Super Bowl game. Interesting that the Gaints Super Bowl XXXV game was QB'ed by Kerry Collins, he seems to demand some respect as the Giants All-Time QB Top Ten (Five) list if getting to the Super Bowl is the criteria. He almost did it again this year with Carolina. I saw Fran play as a Viking, not as a Giant. Simms was a workhorse, highly effecient and leader. I admit, you got me thinking about YA Tittle now, need to do some research on the ol' boy. I really do not know much about his Giants QB days. Because it's so hard to win a modern Super Bowl with league parity finally in place, should Eli win another SB it will take him to the top of the Giants list. He has to be in the top 3 right now with Phil Simms #1...

nice to have someone like Stewiey with that many years of watching Big Blue on the board. Yelberton Albert did take NYG to the Championship game in '61,'62,&'63 but failed in 1960. Of course there were only two teams that made the post season back then, unlike today's tiered playoff system. Similarly look @ Tittle's numbers and QB rating those years. There are MANY variables that make up what teams will get into the post season, i.e. skill players on both sides of the ball and what divisions they play in (see N.E. & Arizona 2009) & (NYG 2006) but your point is credible & well taken. Thnx

Let's get serious. Simms was the man....and was a five tool player. Accurate, great arm strength, read defense well/runs offensive efficiently, team leader and wins. You can't say that of Eli right now. Eli throws bad interceptions at the wrong time, he forces the ball into bad spots, he's not accurate because he struggles with wind(necessary for Meadowlands), and he's been a tad lucky.....

There is no doubt that Eli Manning is a good quarterback for the Giants, and his peformance late last year, culminating with the Super Bowl victory over the Patriots, was sweet. But, you have to consider that quarterback is a position that the Giants have never really had stability with in terms of major success. Remember; it took a number of seasons for Phil Simms to come into his own (I'd say around 1984, his sixth season). Then, Simms lost the starting job to Jeff Hostetler, who helped us win the SB against the Bills. Then came the revolving door: Dave Brown, Danny Kannell, Kent Graham, Kerry Collins, Kurt Warner.... But, for me, I would say Simms has the advantage, not just on a personal level but also the supporting cast he had in the mid '80s.

anyone remember the HOF QB the Giants used to have named YA Tittle? he threw the ball when most teams were still running it 60 times a game. I understand it was a different time and style of play...but a HOF QB still gets my vote.

SHib, as much as I love Phil the QB and warrior/leader he was, I will admit that Yelbertan Albert Tittle was a bit better all around QB than Phil. However, YA would not qualify for best NYG QB of all time IMO for the same reason HOF QB Francis Asbury Tarkenton is not.....longevity with Big Blue. Together Simms has more years with NYG than both of the HOF's combined and for that reason PS gets my vote as NYG's all time best. If the debate changed to the best QB that ever wore a Giant uniform, my list is Tarkenton, Tittle, Warner, Simms, Collins, Hostettler, Manning, Conerly

First I would like to say that we have had good starters and the list provided by gmen11 is pretty accurate with the exception of Warner who never proved anything during his stay with the Giants. I would like to point out that playing for the Giants makes it hard to be a premier NFL QB. 1 / The Giants run first pass second and all the greats are measured on the number of pass completion & passing yards. I bet if the key QB stat was time of possession the Giants QB’s would be top rated. 2/ Most of the QB’s on gmen11 played their carriers at Giants stadium which I believe is the toughest stadium to pass in. So this is the way I think the top Giants QB should be selected Total Wins, Super Bowl or NFL Championships, and by the least amount of turnovers + average time of possession.

ANYONE WHO THINKS ELI, AT THIS POINT IN HIS CAREER, IS THE BEST GIANT QB EVER, HAS TO HAVE THEIR HEAD EXAMINED. IF WE NEED A WIN, IN JANUARY, AT HOME, I WILL TAKE PHIL SIMMS, WHO WAS THE BEST PASSER IN THAT STADIUM, WITH LITTLE TO WORK WITH, ANYDAY, ANYTIME OVER ELI.

A WRITER FOR THE DAILY NEWS SAID IT BEST IN 1994. HE SAID YEARS FROM NOW WE WILL BE WATCHING A YOUNG GIANT QUARTERBACK AND WE WILL SAY TO OURSELVES, " YEAH THE KID IS GOOD, BUT HE'S NO PHIL SIMMS ". THIS WAS THE ARTICLE THE WEEK THE GIANTS ANNOUNCED THEY WOULD NOT BE BRINGING PHIL SIMMS BACK. THAT STILL BOTHERS ME ALL THESE YEARS LATER.
