Numbers that came out of retirement

After Ray Flaherty's #1 was retired (he left the Giants in 1935) Frank Cope wore #1 in 1946; Supposedly Tuffy Leemans' #4 was retired in 1940, but he wore it through 1943 and Leland Shaffer was #4 in 1945. 10  out of 12 found this valuable. Do you?

I'd like to know what's the criteria for retiring a NY Giants number? I did not know superstar HB, yes Halfback, Frank Gifford - #16 was so good. Especially in 1956 when the G Men won the NFL Title over da Bears and Giff was league MVP. Pretty sweet!! Does Eli have it yet? 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

ALL I KNOW IS- IT'S A DISGRACE TO SEE ANYONE WEARING NUMBER 53. THAT NUMBER SHOULD HAVE BEEN RETIRED IN 1988 WHEN THE GREATEST GIANT MIDDLE LINEBACKER HUNG THEM UP. I HAVE HUFF A VERY CLOSE SECOND TO ALL YOU 60 AND OVER FANS. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree whole-heartedly J56......Harry Carson was quietly in the Top 10 MLB's to ever play the position IMO. He was the consumate professional who brought "it" every game. I believe he did not get as much attention as someone like Brian Urhlacker for example, because of a guy named LT, who was an incredible athlete, put in position to change the outcome of games by blitzing every down and owning the spotlight. Carson would have been great on any team in any era, period! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree 100% that #53 should be retired; now here's what I don't know.....In light of his passing away, how about #10 being retired for Van Pelt (ask Manning to wear #12) & what about our all time leading rusher and receiver #21 & #81 respectively? Any thoughts? Do you find this valuable?

the reason very few numbers are retired in football is quite simple...numbers....teams open camp with near 100 players....break camp with 53 active and 6 or 8 on practice squad....they need the numbers active because of league rules reguarding position/number association....that why there are no RB's wearing 56 or O-line men wearing 3....most teams have a hall of fame/ring of honor etc to honor the greats Do you find this valuable?

for clarification....kickers, punters and QB's wear 1 thru 19...RB's 20 through 39 FB's 40 to 49 LB's 50 to59 o-line 60 to 79 recievers and TE's 80 to 89 and Dline the 90's....there are exceptions made but need league approval

and yes I do possess this and more useless info

TO EARLY FOR # 81, AND I DON'T SEE IT HAPPENING FOR # 10, EVEN THOUGH I LOVED VAN PELT BACK THE DAY. IT'S HARD TO ARGUE WITH THE TOTAL YARDS FROM SCRIMMAGE BARBER PRODUCED, ESPECIALLY IN HIS LAST 4 YEARS, CLOSE TO THE GREATEST CONSECUTIVE 4 YR TOTALS EVER, I CAN SEE # 21 SOMEDAY. ANY THOUGHTS?

The possible retirement of #53 is likely, but Carson wasn't the only notable Giant to wear that number. Greg Larson, who was our center from 1962-73 and got to experience both the highs and lows of the team, also wore #53, Do you find this valuable?

I totally agree with Gmen and JOHNNY - why 53 is still in circulation I have no clue. All I think of is Harry when I see 53. Do you find this valuable?

You'd run out of numbers eventually. I don't think we'll see anymore retired #s. Not even Strahan.

A shame though. 53 and 92 should be retired. HOFers. SEMANTIC: gotta love Carl but you gotta save it for HOFers. Do you find this valuable?

Three Giants who have had their numbers retired who are not in HOF and probably won't be are: Phil Simms #11, Charlie Conerly #42, and Joe Morrison #40. There is a precedent set, however Banks doesnt IMO warrant such an honor. Ken Strong #50 and Taylor #56 all but eliminate anymore #'s in the 50's. Strahan would be only # in 90's so I could see that has an option. There are'nt any #'s in the 20's retired yet so Barber is a legitimate option. Phillips,S, currently wearing #21 which leads me to believe we can eliminate that #. Do you find this valuable?

I know there are mixed emotions and his name evokes different reactions among Big Blue faithful, but what about the Tikster? #21....IF his number was retired, we'd still have plenty of numbers left in the 20's? What thinkest thou? den.....you just inspired me to add yet another page to my annual HOF endorsement letter for Simm's enshrinement. LOL Do you find this valuable?

Personally, I think that some of the Giants esp. the HOF'ers should have an Honor akin to their number being retired. Unfortunately, as I and others here are aware, there are too few numbers in the NFL to go around. Extrapolating the situation is the (wonderous!) idea that years down the road, all our players are eventual HOF'ers. So we would "retire" most of those numbers, which would leave us with no #'s for the "current" team. I like the idea of those places with the Rings of Honor, or the Idea of placing their # on the wall/plaque for us all to see. Our Giants have been Blessed with many, many Great talents over the illustrious history of this franchise. As well as the Blessing of the Mara family, whom we should NEVER forget. I feel we should have established some type of Honor for those guys at the New Meadowlands. Plus bestow those revered numbers, (like the #10's and 21's, 53's and such..) on current players "Who exemplify the Honor and Tradition of the N.Y. Giants, and Uphold the Values, Spirit, and Longevity of Playing for one of the Most Recognised, Storied Franchises in NFL History"; in other words-Give to the players-like an Eli -a number like 10-he will only bring greater Honor and Glory to the Franchise, both on and off the field. Granted, there will never be another player like 56, but if a player can EARN that #, then that alone can be an early indicator of the Future staus of that player. Additionally, if he is enshrined then perhaps his Jersey can hang in the rafters like the banners at the hockey stadiums. A kind of semi-retired #. Do you find this valuable?
