Plaxico suspention!?
Is Plax Giants news anymore? It's almost like talking about Spags or Ward!! If he wasn't a Spartan, I may not have touched this thread but he is so I have too!! :)
Burress is no villain. Hope he gets his stuff straight, can contribute better as a citizen and eventually play carefree, high-caliber NFL football. When he did that, Plaxico was fun to watch as a Giant... http://history.giants.com/video/6351190/Super+Bowl+XLII+42+Winning+Touchdown+-+Fan+Perspective

The good, the bad & the real ugly Giants WR news...
This string will help us keep tabs on the Giants WR news, needs and perspectives...
-WR Taye Biddle was signed by the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2006, Biddle lasted just one season in Carolina. He was out of the NFL in '07, and made a brief pit stop in Detroit before landing on the Giants' practice squad last September. Now, after getting shot on Sunday outside his Decatur, Alabama home, pretty much everybody knows his story.
Even though he took two bullets -- one to his hand, another in his leg -- the story wouldn't merit national attention if not for one minor detail: you see, Biddle is the guy the Giants signed to the 53-man roster to replace Plaxico Burress after he blew a hole in his leg back in November.
To Biddle's credit, at least he didn't shoot himself. Even better news: he's been released from the hospital and is doing well.
This is the third incident involving a Giants wide receiver and a gun in the last two months. On Nov. 25, Steve Smith was robbed at gunpoint in front of his home, and three days later, Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg after claiming, ironically, that he was packing heat to protect himself.
I think we all know the Giants and Eli need some big-time WR help in 2009 and resigning Burress and Toomer is not it. Look what Deshawn Jackson did for the Eagles. I like Toomer for 3rd down plays but he's never been a burner, his separation speed is now weak for the NFL plus he's can't stay healthy. Plax should simply go play for the Raiders (that hurts to say being a Michigan State fan!)

JERSEY BOYS: LONG ISLAND NEWSDAY REPORTS: A NUMBER'S GAME!
Jersey boys
Nicks wore a No. 18 jersey this spring and summer. This fall, he'll wear a different one. When TE Michael Matthews was traded to the Patriots, it freed up No. 88, the number Nicks wore at North Carolina. That also means P Jeff Feagles can move back to the No. 18 he wore the last four seasons. Feagles had been wearing No. 17 this season, a number vacated when the Giants released Plaxico Burress in the spring. When he first came to the Giants, Feagles wore No. 10, but he gave it to Manning in exchange for a vacation for him and his family. He then wore No. 17, but a year later he traded it to Burress for a new outdoor kitchen at his home in Arizona. He's been wearing No. 18 since, until this preseason, and is now back in it. And just in case anyone bought a Leger Douzable jersey after his forced fumble helped win the preseason opener, he's changed from No. 78 to No. 90, vacated by waived DE Robert Henderson. den, I'm really pissed; I wasted $19.99 on Douzable pj's with #78 on the back of the shirt and also across the back of the boxer shorts. Just my LUCK!

giants, carolina game
Like I said, time to completely clean out Uncle Tom's cabin! NOT GIANT FOOTBALL gang!!! He has lost the ability to get his team ready for big games and we have NO LEADERSHIP on this team! Eli Manning's on again, off again, style of playing has now permeated the entire club. There were moments again this season, I was ready to say, HE'S ARRIVED, but it is the same ol' story! INCONSISTANCY. He goes and yells at his offense, then comes back and throws a pick! We are 10-11 since losing Plaxico Burress. Without him, we have no credible deep threat that can grab manning's inaccurate long passes in heavy coverage. Steve Smith best 3rd down WR in NFL, deserves to go to ProBowl and Bradshaw is a gamer, playing with two bum wheels all year and still averaging 5 per carry. Boss is in the same context, but rest of the offense made a lot of mistakes throughout the season. Anyone that still wants Sheridan back should get eye exam before Obama-care kicks in. I'm out!!!!

MLB Pierce released!
Pierce kidding nobody but himself saying he has "endless opportunites." Yeah right... And I would love for AP to start for an NFC rival like Philly or Dallas because that means big plays on offense for the Giants. From day 1 as a Giant Pierce was an average linebacker at best-nothing more and not up for debate. And then top it off with typical Pierce to throw a cheap shot at the Giants on his way out the door. "I don't regret anything, not even the negative with the Plaxico (Burress) situation." Really AP? I thought you were supposed to be "the brains and captain of that defense" that's all we ever read about was how "smart" he was. Yeah real "smart"
What an absolute joke! 11-1 and clearly well on our way to our first ever back to back Lombardi trophies and 4th Superbowl title in the last 24 years that would have clearly solidified the Giants as one of the top 3-4 elite franchises in the NFL. We were just mauling teams on the ground with Plax's presence creating matchup problems for every defense. Then we wake-up, open the morning paper and read that Burress and Pierce, two married guys in there 30's with young kids had to be out partying 2 nights before a game. Since that incident, the Giants are 9-12 and have played some of the worst football we've seen around here in a looong time. A complete debacle in '08 and then the unmitigated disgrace in '09. And Pierce our defensive "leader" has "no regrets?" Are you kidding me? Hey Antonio-buh bye and thank you and your buddy Plax for blowing a golden opportunity to add to Giant history. This just in: Super Bowls are very hard to come by. Veterans Pierce and Plax, who even finally got paid, still couldnt dedicate and focus and realize the golden opportunity to repeat as World Champions.

REESE'S PIECES
Those plays certainly didn't help but you failed to mention two bigger plays from my pov; when at two different times (1st play of the game) our WR's got behind the defense and were open, probably for TD's, but Eli could not get the ball to them or even near the! Toomer has an outside shot for the HOF, Hixon is no Plax, but he is a deep threat, Boss is a good route runner & huge target, and Steve Smith could be one of the best possession receiver's in the NFL with a sharp QB. Yes Philly was physical, but they had 9 & 10 within 5-7 yards of LOS, due to their lack of respect for Manning. Their game plan was to make him beat them and he could not even though the receivers, defense & RB's did their part. The Leader on offense was pathetic. I do think adding a Houshmandzadeh would help immensely, but my point earlier was that if David Carr who has only two more years in the NFL could move the same Burress/Jacob-less team down the field for 2 Qts. vs. Minny, our starter should do it better. Ironically, Carr has been pummeled and sacked over 230 times (over 75x his first year) and had VERY little talent in Houston as far as an offensive line and RB's, his QB rating is almost the same as ours. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT!!! There has not been many receivers in the NFL with Plaxico-like size, speed & ability, but good/great QB's find a way to win with all of their other talent. Ponder this: Would Eli still be in football had he been drafted by the Texans instead of SD? My guess is he'd be 2nd or 3rd string or out of football all together by now. Hey, we're on the same side; it's OK to disagree.

Building my Blue "Cassel"s to the sky
This is a nice idea in some respects gmen11, but from the paragraph above I have to say that much of it will not happen. From what i gather about your bias toward Eli Manning and your tag name, it must be negative. The fact is, like it or not, the Giants are stuck with Eli for next season and most likely beyond. Eli so far has proven his worth. Remember Simms struggles came on the road and so do most Quarterbacks in the NFL. If i have a QB with a road winning percentage as high as Eli's i will take that and be laugh at others. Eli is a face of this franchise, if not THE face. As for Matt Cassel. The young QB in NE had a great year and obviously has some talent, having come from a great program at USC. His leadership was tested this year in NE and he proved he could last the season and finish strong. But based on just that, how could you take a Super Bowl winning QB, MVP mind you, with 7 games of playoff experience and replace him with an unproven Almost Rookie Quarterback? If it is based simply on his arm then im sure JaMarcus Russell could throw a nice ball at the Meadowlands too but never in a million year would i sign him. So, in the end you keep Manning. As for Burress, well thats up to Jerry Reese and the State of New York. If Plaxico is allowed to keep playing football then providing a salary cut and several behavioral conditions I would give the man a second chance. He is a great reciever but not a savior. The giants do need a better #2 option and Mario Manningham will never be that. Yes we should bring back Amani Toomer and probably do it for less money. However we should also explore other options at reciever just incase because Domenik Hixon will never be a number one or even number two. No one under 6'4 should be looked at. Sadly Derrick Ward will probably move on this offseason but I would love to have him stick around. If he does leave, you are right to give Bradshaw and Ware promotions because they are a decent second option.

to Plax or not to Plax
I hear and respect everyone's opinion's on wanting Plaxico back, because there is NO DOUBT we are so much better an offense with him as a wideout. Nobody wants to win or root for a winning team more than me, but 4 me, this is more a life issue than it is a football one. I hate to get so serious and philisophical, but anyone else out there sick of the moral decline and the acceptance of it, in this great country? Every day we are faced with yet another person in power or a place of influence that is dishonest, disceptive, and a cheat and yet "WE the PEOPLE" keep letting it happen. What are our kids thinking when they read about todays currupt politicians, our undisciplined athletes and rehab prone entertainers? A-rod, Barkley, Plaxico to name a few. Ponder for a moment if we the people (that spend the $$$) DEMANDED Plaxico be released and the rest of the NFL owners followed our lead. What a message that would be sent to all these "famous" people that if they cannot follow the same rules as the rest of us, their fame will be taken from them. Imagine Plaxico or T.O. having to work in sanitation for a living, or become a roofer and get their hands dirty for less than 75K a year? I am all about forgiveness, but not where we give these overpaid entertainer's a license to do what they jolly well please. I have heard it said that football players/athletes should not be expected to be saints and I get that to a point but what about guys like Walter Payton, Gale Sayers, Mike Singletary, Harry Carson, Phil Simms, Cal Ripken, Nolan Ryan etc., weren't they great players and yet great people too? Plaxico has shown time and time again that rules are for other people and I would rather be part of a change in our culture and be w/o players like Burress, Owens, A-rod, Conseco, Chad Johnson for awhile until the up and coming stars get the point that they r role models whether they want 2 be or not and that we expect more. No more excuses 4 me.

Players, Decade to Decade, Do they stack up?
Nice work on that bro; an interesting topic for sure. I can see that there might not be any real change in height/weight at the former positions you mentioned but what I would also surmise is that todays WR's, RB's, Corners & Safeties are much faster, stronger and jump higher than those of yesteryear. IMO opinion, some of that is advancement in training and some of that is chemical engineering, but I would doubt that any corner/safety in the 30's-70's could cover a TO, a Mike Irvin, Chad Johnson or even a Plaxico Burress. Look at today's prototypical TE; the speed/strength of a Shockey, Winslow Jr. or the agility of a Tony Gonzalez. There are a few exceptions at every position where yesterday's player might compete on today's field but not many. Jim Brown comes to mind but he was a freak and he does not go back that far.Perhaps a Bob Lilly, even though he was only 260lbs and tough guy Randy White was so relentless and determined, he could probably keep up with today's mammoth lineman. Today;s football players train all year round, while i'd bet some of the elder statesmen of our beloved game had to work after the season was over. Since Jimmy Johnson left the U in Miami and went on to coach at Dallas, the name of the game now is SPEED and every player on a 53 man roster had better be able to move, because if not, they become #'s 54, 55 and so on. Saying all that I have no doubt that every player from the 20's on up to the modern day player would not turn down the challenge and fight to the very end with a ferocious pride.

What's it gonna look like in 2009
Without sounding like a tool and reliving my college glory days and I'm only trying to give you a non fans perspective and from someone who played at a high level. I'm not complaining...the 08 Superbowl for me will live on for ever. I am elated with this team; however, the Giants won that Superbowl because of the emergence of Plaxico Burress. The D was fantastic all year, Jacobs was excellent but without Burress the GMen are good...but not great! So to my point about the receivers...the best offensives have very unique and outstanding athletic receivers...Moss, Steve Smith(Carolina), TO(which ever teams he plays for), Reggie Wayne, Wes Welker, Santana Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, Greg Jennings..these receivers are elite. 4.4 speed, great hands, run great double move routes, after the catch burst, blocking ability, focus. Without Burress defenses will play the Giants different. Safeties are up in the box, corners blitz, bump and run. Even with Burress...Eli averages 202 yards per game. The top QB's in the league average 300 to 316 per game. Without him we will rely more on the run game.. I'm sure we can agree with that!
Jacobs has missed 8 games in two years. So without Ward...Bradshaw must be the real deal. I think he will be exciting. Without Burress...and the Giants seems very content to go on without him... the season will be challenging. Manningham, Hixon and Smith are good but won't win you a superbowl because of the lack of combo of skills we need(see above)...just my opinion. Boldin is the game breaker. Britt is nice but the Rutgers track record isn't great.
