Antonio Pierce being recently put on season ending IR has most likely ended his career as a New York Giant paving the way for the begining of the Jonathan Goff error. Frankly, this has been a long time coming as I have felt for a long time that Pierce is no longer an impact player. I have felt overall that Pierce has been overated for most of his career as his only strenghth is his leadership. Don't misunderstand what I am saying, I feel he has been good for this team just because of what he brings as a leader and as a quarteback on the defense. However, his actual physical ability in my opinion was never all-pro. Let's be honest, how many times have we seen Pierce go into a hole and just get lost and make no play on the ball carrier? How many times have we seen him not be able to make a tackle by himself because of a lack of physical strength? Lets face it even his most famous play as a Giant in the NFC championship game against the Packers he could not complete himself. He held the ball carrier and could not bring him down untill the rest of the team came to his aid. I know somebody reading this may say he led the teams in tackles nearly every year, but that to me is one of the most overated stats. He is middle linebacker and should lead the team. The Giants got all they are going to get out of Pierce, as his skills have diminished significantly even before the Burress incident. So now the possible future of middle linebacker position for the Giants is turned over to second year pro out of Vanderbilt: Jonathan Goff. Goff has only seen significant playing time as a special teams player and from what I have observed a very good one at that. When he makes a tackle on special teams you could almost feel it through the television. Nobody really knows how good he is going to be, but how many times has there been a star on the bench waiting for the opportunity? Well opportunity is knocking and for the Goff its his for the taking.

Can you hear David Bowie singing CH CH CH CHANGES......Very interesting article on the changes we can expect this week on defense, including Osi to the sidelines on some running plays, allowing Canty and Kiwi additional reps. Says Osi has been getting raped on running plays which is no surprise to anyone. See "turkey" on Thanksgiving. Will rotate our ends @ tackle and vice versa. I forget what member was hoping for that. We already know Goff starting this week @ MLB. The entire link for those interested: http://www.screamingsports.com/giants101/

The "THIN blue line" of defense, a/k/a NYG secondary, is RANKED #1 in the NFL, according to Long Island Newsday today. An even greater accomplishment with the lack of QB pressure we've generated thus far. Ali, do you think they "CANE" keep it up all year long? (wink wink)

Giants Defensive line is poised to be one of the NFL's best in 2009. Of course, like everyone else, they make mistakes too. Osi leaving practice was a no-no and he knows it:
http://history.giants.com/video/7331345/Osi+Umenyiora+returns+to+practice This D Line might end up being the best of All Time in NY Giants History if leaders like Tuck, Osi and the other Ends and Tackles make it happen. I feel they will! Do you?

During training camp, we have boasted about the phenomenal talent the Giants have on defense. More recently, we have lamented how injuries have decimated the same talented unit, however, we have not discussed how different Bill Sheridan seems to be from Steve Spagnolo. (how many of you thought the post was going to be about bullsh? um hum) gotcha! So far our new DC is VERY vanilla. Few blitzes, even fewer line stunts, pretty much your typical base 4-3 (invented by the great DC of the mid 1950's and NYG player Tom Landry...thanks DEN) Cover II alignment. Perhaps Sheridan is reluctant to be more aggressive b/c our young secondary is so banged up, but besides the injuries this NYG D is nowhere's near as offensive as Spag's "JAGS" were. We are reacting to the offense, rather than dictating to them.(Will Brady ever be the same from all the "pats" on the back we gave him? LOL) The results have been that our two leading tacklers are safeties, alot less pressure on opposing QB, and one game where we gave up over 250 yds of real estate on the ground! Let's face it 2 out of the 3 of Romo's picks had nothing to do with pressue. They were horrible throws and the other INT made by Johnson (THE U) was caused by a last minute change in coverage made by Pierce. A nice heads up call by him; one of the few times he was still upright and not on his back. Imo, Sheridan needs to pump up the volume and take some chances; start stunting/blitzing and being creative. I also concur with Ali "Sherman" Conig that Ross, Canty & company need to lose the lingerie and get back in the lineup! If Kenny was playing on a bum wheel at that level, there are no excuses. Tampa will look to exploit the very weakness just mentioned. My HS football team just played about 50 mi south of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa....it was a "dripping" 93 degrees with 90 % humidity......expect same for 2mro. The very reason I'll be watching @ home

Bad news gang. "The DA's office has confirmed that they are going to seek charges against Antonio Pierce. (See link from NY Post) http://www.nypost.com/seven/07282009/news/regionalnews/antonio_pierce_facing_indict_181745.htm. This incident likely cost us back to back Super Bowls and I am cautiously pessimistic that the media attention this will receive will inevitably have the same effect on our 2009-2010 campaign unless management takes some measures to prevent that from happening. Of course, AP is innocent until proven guilty, however, if the Grand Jury moves to indict him, will NFL have the right/obligation to suspend him? How about NYG management; can they suspend him pending the outcome? I believe like any other American citizen, Pierce deserves due process, but I also suscribe to the addage that one rotten apple should not be allowed to "spoil" the whole bunch either AGAIN. If he is indicted, I hope we can suspend him while he does what he needs to do to prepare his defense, AWAY from the team. Additionally, we should get Derrick Brooks in for a tryout/physical ASAP and start throwing guys like Wilikinson, Blackburn, Kehl, DeOssie or whoever else may be able to play MLB into the fire early on August 3rd. NYG fans deserve better than this; we support our team with time, money and loyalty, while the selfish actions of a few fools can demolish and demoralize an entire organization and fanbase.

No, I am not bashing Michael Boley.......YET, but I AM wondering if another DB could be one of Reese's pieces for our 2009 Championship team. The DB I am referring to is Derrick Brooks, the future HOF'er who is still holding up a "vacancy" sign. Can AP play OLB if we need him to? I know Brooks is up in age but me thinks he can still play the middle at a high level and give us more versatility and depth even if it's just for one more year. Am I in the ballpark on this one or have I been hit in the head with a fastball and in need of the trainer?

I was thinking how much I used to rag on Corey Webster and suddenly the light went on two years ago. However, the Giants never have pro-bowl corners or safeties. So working with what we got...who's your favorite starting four or five if you go nickle?
1. Mark Haynes - CB 2. Greg Jackson - S 3. Terrry Kinard - S 4. Aaron Ross - CB 5. Everson Walls - S/CB in Nickle

Legacy of the Giants Defense: http://history.giants.com/video/4494446/Legacy+of+the+Giants+Defense
Hope this helps you get excited to watch the 2009 NY Giants Defense add to this storied legacy. The old black & white stadium clips, superstar LB Sam Huff, innovative Coach Landry and even actor Rosie Grier, sure looked like good times! Anybody have any thoughts about the legacy of the Giants Defense, now and back then? |
