Giants announced the hiring of Robert Nunn to be new defensive line coach. Nunn coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009. He has been an assistant with the Packers, Dolphins, and Redskins. Nunn replaces recently fired d-line coach Mike Waufle. Waufle recently was hired to be d-line coach for the Raiders. Nunn's hiring fills last remaining spot on Giants coaching staff.

Micheal Eisen states on Giants.com Offseason Report that new Giants DC Perry Fewell might not neccessarily be "married" to a Tampa 2 system. Here are a few GOOD things Fewell accomplished in Buffalo: Team forced 33 takeaways in '09 which was 5th in NFL. 2nd in the league in interceptions. Allowed only 14 touchdown passes each season in '08 and '09. Giants allowed 31 this year alone. So, secondary play hopefully will improve... I think anyone's major concern would be run stopping- we'll have to see what defense he goes with. Thoughts?

Mr. Roble sir, Do you remember saying this: [ The Giant coaches are fine and the Saints coaches aren't all that] What would you give to have the best OC/coach in football, Sean Payton and greatest offensive mind since Bill Walsh, back in BLUE? The Vikings were my pre-season pick to represent NFC, but the Saints will be tough to beat.

I disagree with everyone calling for the head of the defensive coordinator. The D has been hampered by injuries the entire year and they played well enough to win against San Diego. They only gave up 146 yards prior to San Diego's final drive. Yes they got beat, but that happens in the NFL when you don't put your opponent away. A muffed field goal that looks like only the kicker thought it was a fake is all that kept us from a 10 point lead at the end of that game.
I am tired of a predictable offense where it seems like whenever anything is going well we abandon it. I see a lack of aggressive play calling, poor execution at times and a real lack of any innovation on the part of the offense whatsoever. We should be throwing more slants and quick passes to take advantage of our speedsters and keep defenses off balance. All I see though is predicatability, which is why we are getting stopped in the red zone. The playoff loss to the Eagles last year is a perfect example. Jacobs was carving off five yards every run, and Eli was hitting the tight ends over the middle on quick posts. Then every time the Giants had moved the ball into scoring position, they went for long passes instead of pounding Jacobs and had to settle for field goals. The talent we possess on offense is just being squandered, and our D will be fine if they can get healthy and will improve as they settle into the system with Sheridan. Offensively we need to be aggressive, craft plays that work with our personnel, and have better gameplans with better plays and I just don't think Gilbride is up to the task. I want someone like Sean Payton calling the shots.

Sporting News Today. Rumor! Coach Coughlin on short list, (top five) to replace fired Coach Charlie Weis. Article more along the lines of wishful thinking. It noted Coach Coughlins Roman Catholic roots and his prior experience at Boston College. The fact that the underacheiving Giants are having a season below expectations may add fuel to any rumors. Rumors are all it is at this point, but we all know what happens when you give a rumor a little room to breathe. I for one hope it never becomes more than what is now, a rumor.

1. Bill Belichick, New England: No brainer. OK, he's not Mr. Warmth. And he's bent the rules. So has almost every successful coach. Does anyone really think that three Super Bowl titles and an unbeaten 2007 regular season were the result of taping opponents' signals? He assumes he's smarter than anyone else and maybe he is -- although on one day in February, 2008, he wasn't as smart as ... 2. Tom Coughlin, New York Giants: The kind of old school coach who truly does "play 'em one at a time.'' This week is an example -- after his defense was shredded by Drew Brees and the Saints, he didn't rant. He simply went about trying to fix problems in the secondary. Remember that he had Jacksonville in the AFC title game in its second year as a franchise. And outcoached an overconfident Belichick in the Super Bowl. Even his quizzical looks at officials on the sideline reflect something -- he wins more challenges than almost any other coach. And his self-examination at age 60 when he nearly got fired after the 2006 season was totally against his character. The result showed it worked. 3. Andy Reid, Philadelphia: He's below Coughlin because he hasn't won a Super Bowl. But he's been to five NFC championship games in the last nine seasons. 4. Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh: When Bill Cowher stepped down, Ken Whisenhunt or Russ Grimm was supposed to step up. But this "remarkable young man,'' as Dan Rooney called him then, stepped into the Steelers' office and the search was over. 5. Sean Payton, New Orleans: Always a smart offensive mind, he was done in last season by his defense. So he gave up $250,000 of his salary to help lure Gregg Williams to run the defensive unit. Over six weeks, he has the best team in the NFL. Enough said.6. Mike Smith, Atlanta: A generic coach with a generic name who was literally unknown when Arthur Blank hired him after the 2007 season?6a. Josh McDaniels,

Giants GM Jerry Reese confident in team's Super Bowl potential BY Ralph Vacchiano DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Monday, September 7th 2009, 4:00 AM
Jerry Reese likes the look of his Giants team as a Super Bowl contender. Jerry Reese likes the look of this Giants team he's assembled. In fact, he thinks there's a chance he'll like it better than his last two teams."People like to compare teams to the Super Bowl team (in 2007) and the team that won 12 games last year," The rest of the article in NY Daily News for those interested. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/giants/2009/09/07/2009-09-07_giants_general_manager_jerry_reese_confident_in_teams_.html

With nice choices like Coach Tom Coughlin, Bill Parcells and Steve Owen, it is tough to pick. Maybe it's Allie Sherman, Alex Webster or Jim Fassel or could it be Jim Fassel, Jim Lee Howell or the 1st, Bob Fowell, who in 1925 took the Giants to an 8-4 record. I say if Coach Coughlin wins this year's Super Bowl it has to be him!
